More than 60 years of history

Currently, SICA produces all kinds of machines from pipe pullers to pipe packaging and it employs around 160 people, feeding an important number of nearby suppliers. It promotes 200 different machine models, has 26 active patents, sells approximately 500 machines per year, exports 95% of its products all over the world and has a turnover of about 30 million euro. The company is fired by a strong drive to deliver value for customers, employees, shareholders, stakeholders and suppliers, while also pursuing honest business practice that is respectful of people and of the environment.

60’s

13 February 1962: Mr. Osvaldo Giacomoni, together with other shareholders, founded Sica to produce aluminum profiles for doors and windows. The founder, who was a surveyor, soon realized that the first company to invent an automatic machine for socketing plastic pipes would make a big splash.

In 1967 the first socketing machine was created and very soon became a big success in Italy and other European countries, in particular Germany. Later, haul-offs and saws were produced to further satisfy pipe market demand, and a strong focus on internationalization and customer satisfaction became the guiding company attitude as it still is today.

70’s

Belling machines were equipped with hot air ovens. PVC pipe sockets were made mainly by blowing the final portion against external molds. Sockets with gasket seats were obtained by inflating a special rubber ring which was part of the mandrel.

First contacts were made with the Montedison group in Ferrara to start research on socketing polypropylene pipes.
Haul-offs had two tilting belts with constant pulling force guaranteed.
Saws cut with planetary movement of the rotor.
Sica expanded its floor space to satisfy increased production needs.

80’s

Strong investments in Research & Development.
Belling technology for PVC pipe sockets with gasket seats improved by using mechanical mandrels and external pressure.
BA/CA/1T models with SICA1 mechanical mandrels.

First BA/1T/PP model belling machines for PP drainage pipes.
First BA/CA/D/1T model belling machines with mechanical mandrel for corrugated PVC pipes.
First BA/CA/F/1T model Rieber system belling machines.
Thanks to German and Austrian companies requesting minimum internal socket tolerance for PVC pipes, Sica produced special tools (mandrel and external molds) which worked in combination. First the pipe was blown against the external mold then air pressed against the internal mandrel.
TRS model planetary saws for cutting and chamfering with the aid of a mechanical pipe profile sensor to assure a regular cut and chamfer independently of the oval form of the pipe.
HTRS model planetary saws for cutting short-length PP pipes with “cutting on the fly system” (Sica PATENT EP0129515).
TRS/D model planetary saws for PVC and HDPE corrugated pipes for cuting in the middle of the groove
C model haul-offs with multi-caterpillar equipped with an electronic device to thicken the pipe in the area to be socketed.
Sales internationalization and strong commercial exports in Europe.

More investments in technology and floor space for a total of 37.706 m2 of which 37.706 m2 covered.
Expansion in Asian and American markets. Strong cooperation with European extruder manufacturers.

2020s

Digital transformation and the concept of Industry 4.0 characterize this period. SICA, thinking along these lines, has transformed its way of providing service to customers by creating a spare parts portal where, in addition to finding all the documentation related to the purchased machines, it is possible to place online orders.

It offers remote after-sales service with the ability to see what the customer sees from a distance and guide them in real-time during product installation, training, and maintenance and repair, resulting in significant cost savings. The Human-Machine Interface (HMI) is more intuitive, and data collection of performance is also implemented.
